Travel Tips
Arriving to Moscow & Departing By Air
Nonstop flights from the United States to Russia are available
only to Moscow, originating in New York or Los Angeles.
Austrian airline (OS) flies from Vienna to Moscow, Some flights, especially nonstop flights, may be scheduled
only on certain days of the week. Depending upon your
destination and the originating city, you may need to
make more than one connection. Your best bet to travel
safe is to use Helsinki, Berlin, Vienna, or Frankfurt, which have the greatest
number of connecting flights to/ or from Moscow.
As the single-most important transportation hub in the
CIS, Moscow has several airports. Most international flights arrive at Sheremetyevo II
Airport (SVO) (PHONE: 095/956-4666 or 095/578-0101), which
handles an estimated 11 million passengers a year. Built
to cope with only 9 million passengers a year, you can
expect lines everywhere and a wait of up to an hour or
two at passport control.
In addition to its international airport, the city has
four domestic terminals.
Sheremetyevo I Airport (MOW) (PHONE: 095/578-2372), some
30 km (19 mi) northwest of the city center, services domestic
flights to St. Petersburg and the former Baltic republics
(Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). It has also been handling
the international flights of some new Russian airlines.
Domodedovo Airport (DME) (PHONE: 095/323-8565, www.eastline.ru/domodedovo),
one of the largest airports in the world, is some 48 km
(30 mi) southeast of Moscow. After a long renovation it
is now probably the safest airport in Russia. The Russian
airline Transaero has left Sheremetyevo I for Domodedovo,
and has been joined by Swissair and Sabena.
Vnukovo Airport (VKO) (PHONE: 095/436-2813 or 095/436-7112,
www.vnukovo-airport.ru/eng/index.html) 29 km (18 mi) southwest
of the city center, services flights to Georgia, the southern
republics, and Ukraine. Germanwings low-cost airline flies to Moscow Russia from Berlin and Cologne (Koeln) - Cologne/Bonn Moscow Vnukovo CGN - VKO, Berlin Schonefeld Moscow Vnukovo SXF - VKO
Bykovo Airport (BKA) (PHONE: 095/558-4738), the smallest
of the domestic terminals, generally handles flights within
Russia and some flights to Ukraine.
Flying time is 8½ hours from New York, 10-11 hours
from Chicago, and 12 hours from Los Angeles.
Transfers Between the Moscow Airport & Town
By Bus
All of the airports are serviced by municipal buses operating
out of the City Airport Terminal (Aerovokzal) at 37 Leningradsky
Prospekt, near the metro station Moscow Aeroport. Buses also
go from just outside the airport to metro station Rechnoy
Vokzal. From there, it is about 25 minutes to the center of Moscow.
Service is not convenient, especially if you have luggage,
but it is inexpensive. Buses leave for Rechnoy Vokzal
metro station every 5 to 10 minutes but are more erratic
to the Moscow Aerovokzal; service to Domodedovo and Vnukovo domestic
airports is more frequent. Domodedovo is the easiest airport,
with a fast train running from the airport to Pavletsky
train station. Buses also run frequently from Domodedovo
to Moscow Domodedovo metro station. A train also runs from Bykovo
to Kazansky train station.
By Taxi
You would be wise to make advance arrangements for your
transfer from the airport. There are plenty of gypsy cabs
available, but you should know there is a risk of being
swindled. If you do take one, bargain, bargain, bargain.
If you speak Russian you may get to the center for $20.
Anything above $40 is beginning to be a rip-off.
By Car
You can reach Moscow from Finland and St. Petersburg by
taking the Helsinki-St. Petersburg Highway (shosse) through
Vyborg and St. Petersburg and continuing from there on
the Moscow-St. Petersburg Highway.
By Train
Moscow is also the hub of the Russian railway system,
and the city's nine Moscow railway stations handle some 400 million
passengers annually. There are several trains daily to
St. Petersburg, and overnight service is available to
Helsinki, Riga, and Tallinn. All the major train stations
have a connecting metro stop, so they are easily reached
by Moscow public transportation.
The most important stations are Belorussky Vokzal in Moscow, for
trains to Belorussia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and
France; Kazansky Vokzal, for points south, Central Asia,
and Siberia; Kievsky Vokzal, for Kiev and western Ukraine,
Moldova, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary; Kursky
Vokzal, for eastern Ukraine, the Crimea, and southern
Russia; Leningradsky Vokzal, for St. Petersburg, northern
Russia, Estonia, and Finland; Paveletsky Vokzal, for eastern
Ukraine and points south; Rizhsky Vokzal, for Latvia;
and Yaroslavsky Vokzal, for points east, including Mongolia
and China. The Trans-Siberian Express departs every other
day at 4:27 PM.
No vaccinations are required for Western tourists visiting
Moscow and Russia in general. If you spend more than 3
months in Russia, you must present evidence of a recent
AIDS test when applying for a visa. Please check also
the US government travel health pages or Travel Health
Online for current medical recommendations/requirements
and disesase outbreaks in countries you may plan to visit.
sport events
Tickets for sport events are usually sold at the stadium.
There is a huge sport complex near the university, where
ice-hockey is played during the season. Other popular
sport events are soccer games. The Russian Moscow university campus offers
a variety of sports and has almost a hundred different
sports clubs with many famous Moscow athletes among its peers.
tickets for travel
Train tickets are usually sold at the Moscow train stations where
the trains bound for your destination leave. So, ask for
tickets to St.Petersburg at the Leningradski train station,
to Kazan and middle Asia at the Kazanski train station,
to Western Europe at Belorusski station, for Trans-Siberian
trains (except No 26 to Novosibirsk via Kazan, which leaves
from Kazanski) from Yaroslavski (metro Komsomolskaya)
station (go to kassa 45 on the second floor). There are
also many state and private agencies in Moscow selling tickets.
The Central Railway Agency at Komsomolskaya Ploshchad
(Tel 266 8333, metro Komsomolskaya) sells all domestic
tickets. For international tickets, check out Agentsvo
at 1 Lenningradsky Prospekt (Tel 262 0807, metro Beloruskaya).
For stopovers in Moscow, you need to buy separate tickets for each
leg of a journey. In other words, if you would like to
travel from Moscow to Peking, stopping over in Irkutsk
and Ulan Bator, you need three separate tickets, specifying
all your departure dates in advance (i.e., Moscow to Irkutsk,
Irkutsk to Ulan Bator, Ulan Bator to Peking). In theory,
with a Moscow-Beijing ticket you may stopover in Irkutsk,
and with a notation from your conductor, your ticket could
still be used to complete travel to Beijing if you pay
a significant extra fee in Irkutsk for a reservation on
your next train.
transportation
In Moscow, the main means for transportation are metro
trains, buses and taxis. The Moscow metro is the fastest and most convenient way to get
around. It operates from 5:30am to 1:00am, and metro stations
are easily identified by the red (M) signs. Trains run
at intervals of 2-4 minutes, and even 1-2 minutes during
rush hours, and every 5 minutes later at night. Metro
magnetic cards for multiple rides are available at all
metro stations in the entrance hall. One card is good
for an unlimited number of rides, unless you exit the
Moscow metro station, and costs about 30 cents. Monthly and weekly
passes are also available.
