What do hub cities mean to you? Two things:
1. You have direct flights between hubs within one alliance.
That is, direct flights between Toronto and Copenhagen,
or between Warsaw and Chicago.
2. If a hub belongs to your carrier (such as Warsaw is
LOT hub, and Atlanta is DELTA hub, then you might be forced
to pay whatever airfare the carrier wants.

2. Between hubs from different alliances such as from Paris
to Warsaw you will have to fly via your carrier's main hub,
for example, from Paris to Warsaw via Vienna, or Prague,
depending on your carrier. You wouldn't like to go from
Bern to Vienna via Rome, but you might if flying an Alitalia
flight with a connection in Rome...
