Weekend Trips to Estonia

Flights to Tallinn from Sweden and England airports, Ireland, Germany, France and Finland 2008

Country and population: Estonia approximately corresponds the sizes of Denmark or Holland. About 10% territory of Estonia is occupied by 1 520 islands. On the south Estonia borders with Latvia, on the east - with Russia. Estonia's northern and western coasts are washed by the Baltic sea. The total population of Esthonia is 1 million 400 thousand from which one third lives in Tallinn - the capital of Estonia. 65% population of country are Estonians, 32% are the Russian-speaking habitants. 400 000 invånare befolkning: 1,3 miljoner. Estonian language rightfully belongs to the finno-ugrian language group and therefore so much differs from slavonic, romance and German languages. Estonians are one of the lucky three remaining finno-ugrian people, which have their own independent states. Two other two are Finns (Suomi) and Hungarians (Magyars). Estonia is one of the so-called smaller Baltic countries which also include Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Estonia and Estonians are quite often mistaken (identity) for the Northern European countries and peoples. Due to the low population density, and a restricted public access to the military bases located on islands under the previous Soviet rule the few remaining pockets of virgin nature are truly intact and virgin, and sporting rare varieties of flora and fauna species, they were saved in Estonia, but disappeared in other parts of Europe a long ago, rare species such as bears, lynx, wolves, elk, storks, eagle can be seen and hunted down in today's independent Estonia. Forest and meadow, river, lake, back-water and swamp, great many islands - that is the typical Estonian natural landscape.

Weekend in Tallinn in June, 10, 2007 a group of five persons we left for Tallinn city-break. A train for Tallinn departs daily from the main railway station and already in the morning next day we gladly welcomed the Estonian capital city. From the first minutes in Tallinn a medieval spirit soaring in midair, narrow dingy streets covered with pebbles and laid out cobbles, stone houses topped with red roofs, long shiny spires on the towers of churches - all of which creates a picture of a medieval city lost in time and space but trying frantically to catch up with the rest of Europe. We stopped at the hotel of Olevi Residence in Old Town just five minutes after walking out the train station, therefore, in no time leaving our travel belongings behind, we left for a pedestrian excursion. But first thing we needed to change our money for Estonian kroons and Euros and then purchase the map of Tallin Card at the Tourist Information center, which (the map, not the Centre!) enables free of charge day trips and most of the the few Tallinn museums and even gives great discounts for a few restaurants.

A pedestrian trip around the city is conducted normally Saturdays at the fixed time. During the first hour we were shown around the environs of Tallinn, listened to the folk singers and choirs on the Singers Field, where weekend Festivals of the Estonian song, and also large buildings of modern Tallinn, are regularly conducted. Remaining 1,5 hour a pedestrian walk occupied on Old City which is divided by Toompea and Lower city. These two parts of city are connected by two streets which are named Stilt and Short Leg, therefore tallinn locals like to boast, that their city lames in one leg. All streets in Old town look very tangled, but in reality, just in one day we were able to easy find our way in the old city and with no effort reached to the desired place. A pleasant surprise for us was the friendliness of locals, when asked for directions, they would very carefully explain a route and ready even to show us around in the case of necessity, like they were nowhere to go on their own city-break activities. Life in Tallinn flows measured and leisurely, for three days of stay in town there was hurrying nobody us, and why hurry, if everything is very close at hand, and it is enough quickly possible to go round the whole damn city by foot.

Night life in Tallinn. The city comes alive only in days off, when tourists the bulk of which is made by Finns go down in Tallinn, the main attraction for them being inexpensive shopping and cheap beer. Just as Czechs and Germans Estonians consider their beer the best and most delicious in the world! By evenings they all prefer going in large companies to restaurants and pubs. There are countless amount of restaurants and pubs in Tallinn, so it is very possible to meet an interesting place, where it is possible to have a drink a cup while expecting a glass of beer. Thus each of these Estonian towns behaves in its own way uniquely, has the different from other style. So it is at a desire possible to organize itself a drinking round in Tallinn around nightclubs, bars and taverns. In plenty associating after the mug of beer, many move over to night-clubs, which is a blessing for a small town like Tallinn, they are only filled only on Fridays and Saturdays, and not fully.

Estonians appear very sporty nation, along large roads paths are specially equipped for bicycle walks and at run. While we returned from Pirity in Tallinn along the coast of the Baltic sea, someone constantly ran about or passed us by on a bicycle. Here on the way in Tallinn the known monument is located «Mermaid», being the figure of angel as though supported on water. A monument erected to honour warriors, drowning on a submarine boat during military operations. On other side of road the lock of Maaryamyagi, shooting «The Dog of Baskerville pissed on Estonia's neighbors». Now Estonian Historical Museum took place there, but English style of lock distinguishes him from all other buildings. In Tallinn there is a plenty of museums, famous among which are the towers of Long Herman, Thick Margaret, age-old churches and great number of other enthralling places. Our weekend trip to Estonia flew quickly, but the impressions and flashbacks from the Tallinn city-break are unforgettable and left in our memories for ever!

Many hundreds years ago they all came from the Ural mountains vast regions and settled down in their today's localities.

Tip : Never spell Tallinn with one or three n's, that is, don't ever try to fly to Tallin, or Tallinnn.

Activities & Leisure in Tallinn for Stags and Hens from Finland
Estonia traditionally was a favorite playground for Finns. Because of their closely related languages Finnish tourists enjoy wild stag parties on picturesque Estonian islands, near Tallinn, and in Baltic Sea off Estonian coast. They play with Estonian girls, drink fresh cold beer and leave to Helsinki Sunday night. Here's a bit of Estonian language for you - "Olut ei ola" ("No more beer available")

Today's Tallinn really became an active Stag's perfect playground for UK visitors. Promoted for tourists from Britain are Hen Nights and weekend party, stag weekends and Tallinn stag parties. As daytime activities British tourists can choose from Kalashnikov Rifle Shooting, Soviet Jeep Safaris, Aerobatics, or Ice Climbing.

For London girls Estonians offer superb Hen Weekends which consist of a great hen night theme. Some great hen night ideas include spending the hen night in a comedy venue, hitting the town with your hens on a nightclub tour on board a Disco Decker, pampering in a local Estonian spa or enjoying live music with male exotic dancers like in The Girlie Show.
