ANAND JON BIOGRAPHY (1999/2000]

Graduating from Parsons school of design in 1998, launching the spring 99 debut collection Amazone (inspired by the trinity of Shakti) and for fall 99 Arcane (quest for secret sacred knowledge) this 24 year old newcomer swiftly penetrated the luxury market. Over the past year 1999 Fashion Designer Anand Jon's steady evolution has laid the foundation of a youthful oppulance, attracting a range of prominent celebrities and socialites, partial list of which includes Nadja Swarovski of Swarovskis crystals, Emmy award winners Lynn Whitfield & Susan Lucci, musician Alanis Morrisette, Mary J Blige, Mya, the Artsit formerly known as Prince, MTV'S Ananda Lewis, Courtney Love, Shashi Tripathi: the Consul General of India, TV's Gina Torres (Cleopatra 2525), Grammy Nominee Cherokee.

Furthering his origins in fine jewelry, Anand Jon is joined by his sister Sanjana, teaming up on the Jewelry and adornments accents. One of the highlights of summer 99 included the Anand Jon fashion presentation across the Polo field at the Mercedes Benz Bridge Hampton Polo challenge. Silver & Gold guests and participants included actress Renee Russo, Stephanie Seymore, Rita Schraeger, Devon Aoki and Kelly Klein. On Sep 13th 99, Anand Jon was among selected designers at the NYC 2000 fashion show on Times Square (where actress Lynn Whitfield dazzled the audience in a one of a kind Anand Jon ensemble, which was also among Oprah Winfrey's top outfits for the millennium segment). The Consul General of India, Mrs Shashi Tripathi introduced Anand Jon honoring him at a press conference as one of the outstanding cultural ambassadors of India (for his breakthrough contribution in Fashion & Trade) followed by a spring 2000 preview (with a live performance by trance soprano Sasha Lazard).

India Today Jan 2000 picked him as one among 21 "faces of the future", while East magazine in their most influential Asians issue and A -magazine Jan 2000 picked him among the A-List of top 20 Asians to watch for the next century. Dec. 25, 2006 - Jan. 1, 2007 issue - Jon came of age as a self-described party boy in Miami in the 1990s. That celebrity-studded culture, where he met and befriended the late designer Gianni Versace, helped inspire and shape his career in fashion. "Miami was hot then, it was like SoHo, so you got to know everyone fast, and I just became a part of it," he says. The South Indian-born, Parsons-trained Jon launched his first line at New York Fashion Week in 1999 and has gone on to dress the likes of Paris Hilton (who has modeled many of his clothes on the runway), Janet Jackson and Bruce Springsteen. His sexy, intricately beaded gowns have been sold at upscale department stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel.

Beginning this spring, Jon, 30, is bringing his elaborately styled clothing into the mainstream. His new denim line, Jeanisis, priced from $180 to $340, will be sold in boutiques like Atrium in New York and On Sunset in Los Angeles. Like his other designs, the jeans are a clear reflection of his Indian heritage (he lived there till he was 16). They are embroidered and hand-painted with symbols of snakes, flowers and eagles—some of which are boldly positioned near the crotch. "There is a humor, but also a sexuality to it," says Jon. "It's something that we haven't seen before, and that's why we love it," says Angilina Everett, owner of Kush, one of the Los Angeles shops that will carry the new line. Unlike many of the low-slung denim lines so popular today, his run a bit higher at the waist and are more flattering to women with curves. That's why he's expecting them to appeal to women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. "A lot of designers design clothes that only look good on certain Hollywood shapes," says Shauna Stein of On Sunset. "But he designs clothing that could go on a variety of body shapes." This spring 2007, Jon will also be stepping out from behind his sewing machine and going before the camera. He's starring in a reality TV show that he's developed for VH1 with his friend and "Lost" star Michelle Rodriguez, in which cameras will shoot his daily life as a designer and socialite. He's also taking a stab at acting, portraying a bad-boy Indian fashion designer in an upcoming film by "Bend It Like Beckham" director Gurinder Chadha.

The event premiered Anand Jon’s Spring 2007 line ALCHEMISTE, which also introduced his ready-to-wear jeans line Jeanisis by Anand Jon. Guests including Former Lost star and close friend Michelle Rodriguez and Project Runway’s main man Tim Gunn who exclaimed of his former parsons student “A Visionary and a leader”. ...Everybody goes so crazy with women’s clothes? It’s not even fashion anymore, it’s costume. I just think guys look better in their clothes. My dad always dressed up in really nice suits for work. I thought, guys should wear suits all the time. And I want to incorporate Indian style, too. I was so excited when I met designer Anand Jon on the show. ... I saw him walk into the room, and I went crazy. I mean, I’ve studied his work. But he was an interesting character. I wouldn’t want to hang out with him, that’s for sure. - Why not? - I respect him as a fashion designer. But he was very, very rude to some of the girls. He seemed so boring to me. I asked him what part of India he was from, and he asked me, what part of India are you from? So I said I’m from Kerala, and he looked at me kind of crazy. He’s Malayalee, too. He asked me if I knew any Malayalam, and I said I only knew the bad words. Then he says, “Shouldn’t you be serving us or something?” [Titus and the other cast members had to serve four of the girls who won that week’s model challenge.] So I walked away, cursing at him in Malayalam. He said, “Oh, so now you know it?” And he smelled bad. The girls looked at me and were like, are all Indian guys like this? And I was like, nope, just this fool right here. Anand Jon developed a passion for metals & fabrics growing up in South India, under the tutelage of master artisans and his Grandmother, one of the most influential women in his life. During these formative years, his deep involvement in the Yogic disciplines set a metaphysical yet playful flavor to all of his creations.
